Sabrina Carpenter is a 25-year-old girl from Quakertown, PA who’s loved and been involved in the arts forever. Producing her first EP [extended play] “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying” in 2014 when she was just 15 years old. Her music has always been signature popstar music, paving the way for a large fan audience. However, success took a while for Sabrina, as she worked hard to where she is today.
Her starring in Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World” from 2014-2017 and the hit movie “Tall girl” in 2019 got her recognized. However, acting is not where she found her footing. She officially became mainstream in a drama scandal in 2019 between actor and popstar Oliva Rodrigo and her at the time actor boyfriend Joshua Bassett. It started as Joshua started dating Sabrina two weeks after Oliva and him broke up causing Olivia to write a hit song on the situation.
Though Sabrina pushed through her negative attention releasing more and more music even a clapback titled “Skin”. Which led her to becoming a hit popstar comparable to Britney Spears and Taylor Swift. But her real fame is coming right now from her 2024 Album Short n’ Sweet released August 23rd, 2024. The singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” shot to #1 on the charts with anticipation rising for the album. The album also received immediate success with the other 10 tracks also rising on the charts.
As a relatively new fan of Sabrina, I love this album so much. The signature girly pop sound is so refreshing, and it feels like the revival of good old pop stars. The album pushes the envelope with upbeat and almost singsongy tracks about her failed and new relationships. Here are my opinions and favorite lyrics on my favorite songs!
Track 1 – Taste
Sabrina went full call out mode for this one. Sabrina Carpenter had a fling with singer Shawn Mendes in January of 2023 while he was on a break with his long time girlfriend and singer Camilla Cabello. Sabrina and Shawn’s relationship did not last long, and predictably he got back together with Camilla. Camilla released a song called “June Gloom” about how Sabrina was a homewrecker. but clearly that didn’t affect her because this song is a perfect revenge. The song is an upbeat classic angry pop song which recounts the fact that now that Camilla and Shawn are back together, she’ll just have to taste her when shes kissing him. The song is really fun, even being accompanied by a music video. And Camilla has definitely been quiet after its release.
Track 2 – Please Please Please
Sabrina released this song as her second single for the album on June 6th 2024, and boy did it get people excited. This song talks about her new relationship with Actor Barry Keoghan and how she begs him not to embarrass her. I love this song so much, it is very upbeat and just a happy song when the lyrics are kind of funny. But what I love most is the lyricism of this song. It pushes the envelope with crime elements in the music video but also threatens her new relationship, which is such a power move especially because her last relationship was so public. But there’s something about her clapping back to all the hate with a hit #1 song that I just love.
Track 5 – Coincidence
No one likes being cheated on. No one likes having a negative song written about them. But a song is a great clap back for a cheater. This one is 100% a successful clapback, talking about her ex-boyfriend going back to the girl “he outgrew” when she had a suspicion he indeed did not. This song is so upbeat that Sabrina just rubs her success in a cheater’s face which is exactly what he deserves. The background “Oh na na na” is so silly and this song is just a perfect revenge.
Track 9 – Slim Pickins
And she went country!-sort of. Country music has been on the rise lately as artists are rushing to put out their own spin on modern day country. This song really hits that quota for me. Sabrina details her experience of how its “Slim pickins” when it comes to choosing her romantic partner and how “the good ones are deceased or taken”. If I had to classify this in a country realm I would put it under soulful as the instrumental screams good old sad country. But don’t go into this song expecting full country, because it still has the witty lyricism we all know and love Sabrina for.
These are just a few of my favorites, but I highly recommend going and listening to the entire album if any of these interest you. Sabrina Carpenter is currently in a league of her own, with witty lyricism and a pop sound that no one else is coming close to. All 12 tracks are masterpieces in there own way and I highly recommend this album!
