Traditional homecoming proposals are just signs with a little gift on the side. And they suffice. But not all students want to conform to the typical idea.
Gaige Curtis, 11, decided to go all out to ask Sanibel Duncan, 11, to homecoming, and he believes it was the best decision.
¨She wanted it to be good, and I’ve never really asked her because we have been together for three years. I just decided to go all out. I decorated her room with flowers, balloons, candles, confetti, and a boo-basket.”
Gaige had the help of Sanibel’s mom to set everything up, with even the entrance leading to the room fully decked out with candles and rose petals. After this experience, Sanibel Duncan also had something to say about the more dramatic way in comparison to the more traditional proposal ideas.
¨I think it shows the level of love for you and it’s good to show they are going above and beyond for you,¨ said Sanibel.
They weren’t the only ones who decided to go all out. Jaxon Anderson, 10, and Kalli Mohegan, 10, had a similar proposal to the one before.
¨I decorated her room the way she would like it with our favorite song on a sign for an add-on. The song was ‘All the Stars’ by SZA and Kendrick Lamar. I used fake candles, I didn’t want to set her room on fire or anything. The huge Hoco balloons that people do not typically get, just little streamers and whatnot. Her mom did help me.¨
¨I think you do not need to go all out but just have fun. I like doing big stops and I know she enjoyed it. There’s nothing too crazy about it,” added Jaxon.
Kalli Mohegan loved the special moment they shared and believes that overall it should be something more special rather than a typical sign.
¨I got home and it was all set up, my mom had sent me to help Halley Manley, 12, with her painted parking spot. Jaxon had turned off his location so I was a bit mad at that but he ended up just being at my house. The sign said ‘All the stars would shine with us at Hoco’, and he had the song playing with the entire room decorated. Then, he bought me Cheez-Its and Diet Coke because those are my favorite things in the world. Yes, it makes it so much more special. It makes you feel special. “
Jack Harfst and Chloe Gundrum even won free homecoming tickets because of their extravagant homecoming proposal.
Their special moment was in the backyard of Jack’s home and it ended up being very romantic.
“He had light-out candles aligned up that said ‘HOCO?’ and had a heart. It was dark out, and we walked out to his backyard. The sign is too traditional and classic; everyone does it. So it was kind of a big surprise, and it felt more special. There was a lot more thought and effort put into it,” said Chloe.
¨I knew that Chloe would want something special, and she means a lot to me. I thought it would be good to do that. I had a lot of help from other people. It means more to them and it is something they will remember rather than just a sign,¨ said Jack.
“If you are asking a girl to homecoming try and make it more personalized and more meaningful,” said Chloe.
Although everyone has four homecomings, make it something that both of you will always remember. And, next year be sure to enter your proposal in the contest to win tickets courtesy of the MHS Student Council and go all out.
