Imagine you get dressed and get ready to head to your family member’s house to celebrate Thanksgiving and share all the good treats. You are feeling great and are happy you get to see your family for the first time since the last holidays. You open the door and hear your grandparents arguing about the election with your cousins. Then, just to add to all the crazy, you even hear your dad and uncle arguing about the football game and whether or not they should have gotten that first down or not.
“My younger brother’s birthday is super close to Thanksgiving. So, we took the opportunity to celebrate his birthday. I removed the cake’s decoration because it was time to cut it. My brother got so angry at that that he started punching me and throwing me around. It was in front of my entire bloodline too,” said Anonymous, 12.
With Thanksgiving, there is so much stress associated with seeing family members and tensions are even higher with it being an election year.
“There are always petty arguments with my family. Certain family members always have something to say. It is always about something dumb and nothing serious. Stuff like ‘why aren’t you smiling?’ or ‘why is the food not hot enough?’ then five minutes later everything is fine. Or, even why are the kids watching a Christmas movie and not a Thanksgiving one,” said Jayda Miley, 12.
A fun dinner can turn into a silent awkward supper really quick. It is even worse when your favorite cousin has yet to show up. Situations where your grandma looks you up and down and says “You’ve gotten bigger” are the WORST. You don’t want to be rude to your grandma but at the same time, you want to blow up on her.
“Someone asked me ‘Is that your third plate?’ and looked at me really bad. Like no, it’s not, “ said Journey Palmer, 10.
There are good parts of Thanksgiving, such as the food that makes you feel like you will be full for a week and it’s great. And, for a while, you’re laughing with your family and talking about what crazy thing your uncle did three years ago. These times feel like the holiday it should be, but the environment can switch really quickly.
“They kicked out my brother over a stupid argument during Thanksgiving,” said Sawyer Newsom, 11.
Thanksgiving is a holiday with both good and bad parts. Seeing your family is great, but it can be a lot depending on your family’s personality. Even catastrophic meal incidents are bound to happen.
“One time we had a turkey blow up in the oven,” said Rylee Brockhouse, 10.
From snide comments about whether or not you got your ripped jeans on sale to family members being kicked out, Thanksgiving can sure be funny. Be sure to tell us about your experiences with Thanksgiving in the comments!
