Many of the musical extracurriculars offered at the high school will feature Jett Wagler and his bright personality.
Jett participates in a multitude of activities including marching band, play, jazz choir, and jazz ensemble. In the near future, he plans on being involved with the musical and honor band.
Handling so many activities is sure to be tiring. But Jett has found that he can handle it all with just a little bit of time management.
“Often, I have to consider the time I can spend on schoolwork with all my activities going on. Within that, I have to consider when everything is due, what I need to worry about right now versus something I can do later, and how much effort I can stand to put into a given assignment. I never like to turn in subpar work, but certain assignments just either don’t require a ton of effort or can be easily cheesed (assuming they are not assessments). Overall, it mainly comes down to knowing what to do and when to do it,” said Jett.
Many students have free periods or even free time during class where they work on other classwork.
“Something I do very often to make time is to work on whatever while I am waiting for the traffic to die down after school (I do NOT trust y’all, sorry),” said Jett.
Jett sometimes has free time when he likes to listen to music or watch long YouTube videos. He usually draws while doing this, but knowing when to take breaks is key.
“I like to draw because it feels like the one thing I have full, complete control over in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love music and my various extracurriculars, but drawing gives me a freedom that I can’t quite find anywhere else,” said Jett.
Some people may start drawing because they have always been interested in it, or their parents would draw, but for Jett, it was a bit more relatable.
“Funnily enough, I initially started drawing seriously in 5th grade in an effort to impress my friend that I had a crush on at the time (chivalry isn’t dead, ladies). This person really enjoyed certain online artists, so in an effort to totally win them over, I’d draw the characters of those online artists. Now, this should go without saying, but my drawings totally sucked back then, and few of my peers would make me hear about it (it’s almost like I was in 5th grade or something…) Despite initially not having an artistic bone in my body in terms of drawing, I persevered with it and became a halfway decent illustrator, “ he said.
If you see Jett around the school, then you definitely have seen the variety of cool outfits he has on.
¨I get the majority of my clothes from a store in Iowa City called Ragstock. Once I shopped there with my grandma like three years ago, there was no turning back. Ragstock has by far the most fun clothes I have ever seen, and chances are if you see me I’ll be sporting some kind of sweater from them or something. I will say it did take a hot minute to come into my own when it came to my fashion sense,¨ said Jett.
“One of my all-time favorite patterns to wear is the bowling alley/arcade floor pattern because it’s just such fun. My main rule when it comes to style is to dress like a person who I’d walk by in the hallway and think ‘Dang, he looks totally cool’ or ‘Wow that guy is a total nerd.'”
In high school, a lot of people are afraid to be themselves in the fear of people judging them. But, you shouldn’t have to worry about it, be yourself! This is something that Jett has learned to live by to make the best of everything.
¨Based on what I have heard from others, I would describe myself as someone who is pretty easygoing and friendly with a totally stupid sense of humor. I am no stranger to totally awful jokes and puns and will tell them as they come to me with glee as people groan. Even if I am still a little reserved, I am a lot more outgoing than I was 4 years ago. Oftentimes, I talk very loudly or get very passionate without knowing and have to be shushed by someone. I love making silly noises when appropriate and doing silly things as I am no longer super afraid of being my silly self. The way I see it, we need people who are outwardly kind and unabashedly goofy in this world. I am a total goofball and proud of it, and nobody will take that away from me.”
