There are many very involved students in high school. One of the busiest is Junior McKenna Schumaker. Mckenna’s accomplishments include junior class president, choir program ambassador, and school board student representative.
“I do not know how I manage my fridge calendar, it is my best friend.” Mckenna said, “I’ve been much more involved in high school than in middle school or before. I learned that I thrive being busy and have gained many connections, friends, and experiences through the activities I have chosen to participate in.”
Despite being involved in almost every activity in the choir department, she has a favorite.
“Spring Musical is my favorite, I have enjoyed all of the ones I’ve been in but a dream would be to do Beauty and the Beast”
Family and friends are very important to McKenna. She has an older brother who’s a junior in college and a twin sister Claire, who is her built-in best friend. However, she has a hectic schedule and often finds spending time with her loved ones difficult.
“My mom is a big motivator for me as she helps me manage my time and is always encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone,” McKenna said.
“When I get busy, I feel the worst for my boyfriend,” she said, “However, it has been better lately. It’s all about prioritizing your time and what you do, so I will choose to see him over any of my activities any day.”
She has a lot on her plate this year, but it was worse last year. She says that she constantly felt overwhelmed because she was adding so much to her schedule. She soon realized that it was simply impossible
“I was at the school more than my house for most weeks,” McKenna said, “I learned that you have to prioritize your activities and determine what is a need and what is a want.”
As far as her future after high school, she plans to go to a four-year college and major in communications. She believes her high school experiences have set her up for her college life.
“I’m hoping to become a public relations specialist and with the experience I have gained speaking and singing in public I know that PR is something I will enjoy and excel at,” McKenna said, “I have gained the most out of my school board position in this stance because I have to prepare a report and then present it every month.”
Her goal for next year is to “speed run to the finish line” She wants to leave her mark at MHS although she feels she already has from hearing about her impact on underclassmen. She doesn’t like thinking about her accomplishments but rather who it will impact.
“Your four years at MHS are super short. I feel like I was a freshman walking in for New Muskie Day just yesterday,” McKenna said, “So make the connections and join the clubs while you can. I’ve made lifelong friends through some of my groups and I’ve become a better leader and student as well.”
Although she is very busy, McKenna has loved her high school experience thus far. If you get the chance to hear her sing, whether it’s the national anthem at a sporting event or a choir concert, you will be impressed.
