In the past two years, AI has become more prominent in the school setting. Most students started using either snapchat or ChatGPT to help them write essays or to help with assignments. AI quickly became forbidden in the school setting, but are there upsides to AI?
ChatGPT is a chatbot that uses Natural Language Processing to provide human-like answers to users’ questions, no matter the topic. However, research has shown that ChatGPT can positively affect a student’s learning ability. While using it every day, ChatGPT may not be the most practical, but it is especially helpful for teachers. Many educators use the AI app to help them create lesson plans to teach their students. While, some people may see this as an easy way out or “lazy”, it may be a teacher’s last resource on a day that they need something planned.
Another big upside to the chatbot is its studying help. In ChatGPT, Whether online or on the app, you can ask it to explain how to do a certain math process, but have it put in terms that a fifth-grader would understand. Well, this is very convenient. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t be ignoring your teachers because ChatGPT can help you.
One of the biggest downsides to ChatGPT is that it is prone to producing false or misleading information such as making up false articles or using nonexistent URLs in references in its responses to users’ questions. ChatGPT uses data produced before 2021 making it difficult to rely on answers that are related to recent events.
But don’t get too ahead of yourself, while ChatGPT is useful in some aspects of learning, many teachers now use AI detectors to be able to tell if the essay that you wrote was written with AI. Grammar tools, such as Grammarly also sometimes get flagged for AI if you were using the app to rewrite whole sentences.
In the end, the use of AI in schools is a double-edged sword. Well, there are many benefits to ChatGPT. There are also money downsides. relying too much on AI can weaken thinking skills and reduce student effort. One of the main conclusions with AI is that it should be a tool to enhance education, not replace human teachers or real learning experiences. The future of AI in schools isn’t necessarily bad—it just depends on how we choose to use it.
