Junior, Calina Fox is a fun MHS student who has a wardrobe full of expressive and notable outfits to match her energy. Calina is proudly herself, but still uses inspiration and influences to help her portray her bright personality.
When choosing an outfit, Calina follows a certain process. The influence behind the outfit consistently relies on her mood the night before, while choosing what to wear.
“I always pick out my outfit depending on how I am feeling or sometimes the weather or how I am doing my hair.”
Besides the influence of emotion, weather, and hairstyles, Calina doesn’t have much of a fashion “Icon.” While mixing different pieces, she looks up to her older sister, Kali, for feedback.
“When picking out my outfits, I always ask her opinion and love hearing her input on literally everything.”
Calina also loves Emma Chamberlain’s vibe, yet strays away from following her exact look.
“I kinda just do my own thing.”
Comfortability and style are the top two priorities while creating and piecing together a look. It’s important to match the weather, yet it’s equally important to wear what you want. Luckily, Calina finds the perfect middle ground in each outfit and views these two factors as hand in hand.
“I am comfortable in everything I wear. It’s kinda like looking good, feeling good. So when I like my outfit and think it’s cute, no matter sweats or jeans, I’m comfortable.”
Comfortability between outfits, and a wardrobe happens over time. Of course, changes in the way she dresses are simply a sign of the times. Just like everyone else is constantly changing and developing, Calina’s taste evolved over the years as well.
“I used to love wearing Vans sneakers, and now I would never, well maybe not never, but definitely not my everyday shoe.”
Now, one of her go-to choices for shoes are her Adidas campus 00’s, inspired by Harry Styles. Some of her clothes have also been influenced by popular fashion trends on TikTok.
“I love the cheetah print, and I love the bows.”
She is fond of a trend as much as the next person, however, she still makes what she wears into something of her own. She shared that if she could go back and live through a past trend, it would be,
“The Jersey Shore era. I Love the animal prints, chunky jewelry, low-rise jeans, just everything about it.”
As Calina has shared before, her style isn’t specifically influenced by a certain era. She constructs her outfits based on clothes that make her feel happy and confident. Regardless of planning outfits and having artful style ideas, everyone has those days when they have no idea what to wear. When Calina is at a loss for what to put on, she starts her outfits from the bottom and then works her way up.
“I feel like a simple black baggy jean is perfect and probably my go-to. I think it goes with anything, and you can dress it up with a cute little top or down with a hoodie or sweater. So whenever I’m struggling to find an outfit, I know a black baggy jean will fix it.”
Having an infinitely customizable staple piece in one’s wardrobe is a perfect idea, and Calina always finds a way to mix it up with new and fun statement pieces. Her closet is constantly circulating with second-hand clothes being added in,
“I go to Goodwill way too much. I, no joke, probably go at least once a week. It is a blessing to find the cutest clothes for so cheap, and sometimes I just like to look.”
The cheap and accessible clothes make it easy for one to buy things they end up not liking, or buy more than their closet can hold. Unsurprisingly, Calina can find the balance between what she chooses to buy and what she chooses to keep.
“Every Sunday I do a little Sunday reset and clean my room. So I always do a quick look through my clothes… during, like, winter break or spring break, I will go through my clothes, and if I haven’t worn something in, like, the last year or so, I will try and wear it one more time. It’s hard for me to get rid of clothes because I feel like I will eventually wear them, but cleaning my closet so often makes me feel like I wear everything in it.”
Along with repurposing old or unused clothes comes new and creative ways of styling said clothes. Some ways of styling fit in with current trends, but some ideas are truly out there. For Calina, taking a risk in her fashion paid off.
“I wore a jean jacket with blue jeans that were different shades of denim. I was scared it would look tacky, but I loved it. I got a lot of compliments on that outfit and I’m happy I decided to take that risk because now it’s like my favorite thing ever.”
People normally shy away from wearing things that may be deemed odd or different, but that’s what makes Calina stand out. Her blatant disregard for others’ thoughts on her appearance and clothes has brought her happiness and confidence in herself. The other thing that makes her stand out she can mix creativity and ambition. When asked to design her dream outfit, she also described her living her dream life. To set the scene, she’s obviously a model in New York, and maybe even during fashion week. Her outfit would go exactly like this:
“I would have some designer fur coat that’s a light brown, you know with my hair down and blown out with some Louie sunglasses and a Rhode lishe can the prettiest black lace designer dress; … definitely the best of the best. I would have red-bottom heels with the finest gold bracelets. The most beautiful Cartier necklace and the chunkiest gold hoops. I would be covered in the best Chanel perfume and be living my best life. “
Honestly, I love it. A dream outfit would only fit in with a description of one’s dream life. With both Calina’s dream and her fashion, there are simply no limits. Far too often people limit themselves in fashion and other aspects of their lives. When these limits are thrown out the window, it’s possible to finally put on that dream outfit, and create that dream life. For Calina, fashion is more than just matching a sweater with a pair of shoes. It’s an expression and an extension of herself.
“It makes me myself. I have the mindset of doing what’s best for me, and I am able to show that through my fashion. I truly just wear what I want and what I think, and that’s just who I am.
Of course, her self-expression closely ties into mindset and self-love as well.
“I think that since I wear whatever I want and I have the mindset of not caring what others think, I have more self-love. I put myself first and am okay with the fact of wearing something some people may find ‘ugly’ or just don’t like. I wear what I want, and I feel good in my clothes and I feel that because I care and love myself. “
Her way of in things that make her happy and loving herself makes Calina stray from the normal. She encourages others to do the same thing with their own clothes and break fashion rules.
“Try wearing something ugly. Wear something, not everyone likes and just you. Wear something that is a little outside of your comfort zone.
Moving outside of one’s comfort zone is the only way to discover one’s likes and dislikes in fashion. When trying to find one’s sense of style Calina says,
“Wear whatever you want. I think people always worry about what others think, and I know it is easier said than done. But once you start to wear anything you want and stop caring about what everyone else around you thinks, things do get so much easier. Don’t wear something everyone else likes. Wear something only you like because it truly only matters if you think you look good. Honestly, I don’t even know what my style is, I just dress how I want. Which is how everyone should be.”
Calina has lots of fashion advice, so try to learn from it! Maybe everyone should aim to be a model in New York with a nice fur coat, covered in Chanel perfume.
