The smell of baked goods lingers throughout the school, passing into the MHS gym. The colorful icing and one-of-a-kind designs make you crave a bite!
Senior Anna Boyer has a strong passion for baking and decorating cakes. Anna created five different cakes for the cake auction. Each cake represented something different and creative. This has only been a significant part of her journey; let’s take it back to her 8th-grade year.
As a kid, Anna developed a love for baking that led her to start selling the cakes she made. She learned from watching tutorials on YouTube and Instagram. The first cake she made was for her aunt’s birthday.
“Everyone was like oh wow you should keep doing this! So then I just kept practicing.”
Slowly, friends and family started asking her to bake cakes for them. She has spent countless hours perfecting her recipes and experimenting with flavors and designs.
“I love the decorating part and the creativity of it”
When trying a new hobby, it is important to have a support system. In Anna’s case, she has a lot. While being a triplet gives you built-in best friends, you also get a support system. Ava and Ella Boyer are a huge help when it comes to Anna’s baking. Being a sister makes it easier to work together and to share a bonding moment together.
“They all really support me and everyone likes to come over to try and grab frosting.”
Anna also mentioned her dad was a big inspiration for her. He always pushed her to keep trying.
Anna plans on going to Iowa State next year to study culinary food science. Her goal is to own a bakery/cafe with her different creations. The thought of filling her own bakery with sweet pastries and cakes is the perfect vision.
“I want to go, not to a big city but big enough to have lots of clientele.”
The experience wouldn’t be new, considering Anna worked at West Hill Cakery for three years. This position gave her an inside look at exactly what she wanted to pursue. Anna learned a lot from this experience and hopes to work in different bakeries in the meantime.
While she isn’t just a baker, she is also an FFA member, a talented swimmer, and a golfer! You can say she has a wide horizon. Anna has competed in several competitions for FFA and even for swim. It is easy to say she is a hard worker with a strong work ethic and a determined personality. Anna is set on what she knows she can accomplish, she hopes others follow their dreams, just like she did.

Anna, I enjoyed reading about you in the Aurora.
Your decorating skills shine in the two cakes featured in the article. I did get a chance to taste one of your cakes from the MHS auction and it was delicious. All the best at ISU!
