In high school sports, very few athletes shine as brightly as sophomore Taryn Watson. A standout in track and academics from early on, her achievements already set her on an amazing path of success and greatness.
“I feel very proud of taking my 3 relay teams to state last year in track, especially as a freshman. It’s something that I feel very proud of having accomplished,” she shared.
This achievement speaks volumes about not only her skill but also her dedication, which is extremely impressive, especially given the challenges that come with high expectations, even as an eighth-grader.
“Having the spotlight on me before entering high school was very nerve-wracking. I definitely felt a lot of pressure and had very high standards to uphold,” she admitted.
However, she quickly turned the pressure of the spotlight into motivation.
“I think feeling pressure and having high standards is a privilege, and it pushes you to want to work hard for yourself as well as others.”
With the new track season, Taryn has her sights set high, hoping “to take another relay team to state again but also try to qualify for state in an individual event. I feel that it is possible and something I’m looking forward to accomplishing.”
Taryn’s determination and optimism are fueling her success in the coming season. Her preparation for competitions is a huge part of this, the ritual being both practical and thoughtful.
“I like to prepare for competition by listening to music and socializing with my teammates. I think it’s essential to talk to your teammates to help get the stress and nerves out of your system. And on track, before we run, we pray together to help us achieve the goals we have set for us,” she shared.
This focus on her mindset and teamwork sets her up for a good day of competition. For many, the realization of how important this part of sports really is comes a bit later in life. But for Taryn, it has been a bit different as she has had a powerful role model—her father.
“My biggest motivation in my life has always been my dad. He’s been my coach since the very beginning. For everything I have accomplished, I give thanks to him,” Taryn said.
Her dad’s influence and guidance have been instrumental in shaping her both as an athlete and as a person. “I wouldn’t be the athlete I am without him,” she said.
This deep involvement and encouragement from a young age has shaped her into the person she is today.
“I wouldn’t know many of the girls I do right now if it weren’t for sports, and I’m so thankful for how sports have brought some of my best friends into my life (shout out Macy Reno),” she said.
From life lessons to overall growth, Taryn credits her competitive life, emphasizing the importance of genuine hard work.
“Talent only gets you so far. The difference between you and another person just like you is the effort you put in that people don’t see. I feel that this applies to everything in life,” Taryn said.
This thought process is exactly what Taryn hopes other girls strive for when aiming for similar success in both academics and sports.
Her advice is simple but effective; “Find people around you who have the same goals and interests. Having people like that keeps you disciplined and pushes you to be the best you can be.”
From her remarkable accomplishments to her dedication to personal growth, Taryn Watson is an outstanding person and athlete. Her determination, resilience, and appreciation for her family and teammates make her a genuine source of inspiration for others.
