Mia Collazo is a Sophomore at Muscatine High School. Before the start of her high school career, Mia envisioned her life ahead. Her dreams are bigger than the city of Muscatine—maybe the size of the United States.
Her aspiring dream of becoming a politician skyrocketed in the first semester of her sophomore year, after an assignment in which students were supposed to write a letter to a celebrity. This letter was supposed to be to a role model that they looked up to career-wise, in hopes of getting a response to benefit them as students learning about their intended career

When choosing between Taylor Swift and Kamala Harris, Mia decided on Kamala Harris. She was looking forward to getting a response that resonated with her personal life and goals. In about three months, from the end of the first semester to the start of the second semester, a letter from the Office of the Vice President was sent to the High School’s Student Services office, and Mia was presented with the letter.
“I remember I went into Mrs. Weigel’s room, she didn’t have a period at that time and we opened the letter together”
Looking back at the letter that Mia had sent to Kamala, she wrote about the struggle of making it into the Office not only as a Woman but as a Colored woman. Making it into office while it is primarily a male-dominated field is such an issue and was constantly looked down upon as Kamala ran in the 2024 elections
“I’m doing this for my parents too, they didn’t go to college, nor did they have the opportunity to, but regardless my dad still has how own business”

The inspirational standard that her parents have lived up to, indulges Mia in her future further as a politician. Mia actually revealed something interesting in saying that despite her father and her sister being into business, she really isn’t that much, but she does enjoy BPA and the opportunities that it has provided for her and in giving her an insight into her future career dreams.
From February 16-18, a group of students across Iowa, BPA members came together at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines, Iowa. With that being said, Muscatine for the first time ever, has been invited to compete in a BPA competition (Business Professionals of America) During this competition the students would compete against each other setting up their own presentations, and creating speeches over various topics. At the end of the competition, the award ceremony was held, and Muscatine, Mohit Wani came in 2nd place overall.
“I was at my sister’s birthday dinner when Joe Biden posted the announcement that Kamala Harris would be stepping up, and I thought, oh my gosh this is history.”
