You might have heard her name around before, Jazlyn Enrequiez, a wrestler and star student. Jazlyn is a freshman with a strong rep this year. While this is only the beginning of her high school career, her passion began in 7th grade. 15-year-old Jazlyn is the youngest of 6 siblings and has been wrestling for three years now. It started solely with free time.
“My friend started it and convinced me to join, so I gave it a shot,” shared Jazlyn.
She first joined the team at her old school L&M, where she began her love for the sport. She shared that although L&M is a much smaller school compared to MHS, they are still heavily involved in wrestling. Here at MHS, with a bigger team and school, it is easier to keep pushing and practicing.
“My teammates, family, and friends are always very supportive,” she said.
MHS has allowed her passion for wrestling to expand and open her eyes to more of a challenge with people who share her passion. As well as the coaches who support and teach her more about the sport and how to exceed. In January Jazlyn won a bracket at regionals, qualifying for state.
“I loved the adrenaline and the feeling of winning,” exclaimed Jazlyn.
Jazlynz placed eighth and was the only freshman to place at state! This accomplishment was big, not just for her but for her team and family. It was her first time ever attending a tournament that big, admittedly it was nerve-racking. Her wrestling life has improved but she shared how her social life has as well.
“I feel that wrestling has made me a lot more responsible and I’ve made new friends. Usually, I’m a bit shy,” admitted Jazlyn.
After the tournament, the whole school knew the name, Jazlyn Enriquez. This was definitely a turning point for her first year of high school as she expressed that the acknowledgment was nerve-racking. Still, she plans on continuing her wrestling path throughout high school and mentioned the idea of becoming an athletic trainer in the future.
“Wrestling has inspired me and is a big part of my life,” Jazlyn shared.

Although this school year’s wrestling season has come to an end, Jazlyn wrestles year-round through the club Sebolt Womens Wrestling Academy. She hopes to inspire other young athletes and set herself up for a strong season next year.
“Do it and if you don’t like it you can say you tried it at least. In wrestling, even just trying is enough.”
