What is Mother’s Day? How did it become a nationally recognized holiday?
Mother’s Day was originally created under the name “Mothering Sunday,” and it was established by Greek and Roman celebrations, but also by American woman Anna Jarvis in 1905. In 1905 after Anna’s mother passed, she made it a point to set aside a day to celebrate motherhood, and kept pushing until it was recognized by all. Eventually, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a national holiday to take place on the second Sunday of May.
The history of Mother’s Day is important, but it is also important how we celebrate the brave mothers of the world. Through the years, tradition has been found in buying floral arrangements and arrays of chocolates for mothers and grandmothers. Chain stores have caught on over time, and flowers are pushed in everyone’s face as soon as May is on the horizon.
Flowers are a sweet and beautiful gift, but what is something more thoughtful that your Mother will never forget? Here are some ideas on how to really win your mother over this coming Mother’s Day.
An Experience – Instead of a bouquet of flowers, take your mom on a weekend getaway to a spa like “on the rocks massage” here in Muscatine, or a place that is meaningful to both of you. This can be something extremely personalized, like a hiking trip if your mother is active, or a day trip to your favorite diner a few hours away. Experiences have a lot more meaning to them as they turn into lovable memories and pictures that can be treasured forever.
Finish Chores, Clean up – This might seem silly, but the last thing a mother wants to do is spend the Monday after Mother’s Day cleaning up a dirty house. If your mother has a to-do list, take the time to check some things off for her to make her day and week easier. Doing something as simple as making the house clean and organized can really touch your mother’s heart.
Something Sweet – A sweet treat is on the simpler side, but for a mom with a sweet tooth, this is extremely meaningful. A personalized cake with all of their favorite flavors and favorite colors is something smaller that can really stick with a Mom for a long time. A cake, cookie cake, or Danish is a lot more meaningful than a box of chocolates, and a lot more tasty. Here in Muscatine, “Thedough_IA” on Instagram makes personalized cakes any Mom would love.

As Mother’s Day comes and goes, remember to appreciate and do things for your Mother every day of the year. You only get one mom, so treasure them while they are still around.
