Movie review: The Sinners
I recently went to the Coralville movie theaters and purchased a ticket to see The Sinners, and I am so happy I spent my money on it. |
This movie utilizes villain vampires combined with racism and colonization. Typical vampire movies can be cliche, but this one was not cliche at all. The movie depicts members of the Ku Klux Klan trying to take the lives of African Americans. It also refers to the Irish being colonized and forced into the Christian belief system. The movie was so good and the production was brought up so incredibly well,I have absolutely no critiques. I don’t feel this way about movies most of the time, just because movies usually have that certain something, but the ending gave me all the closure I could hope for.
There was a lot of gore in the movie, but nothing too disgusting. Scenes included all sorts of emotions, not so much focusing on the horror part as showing how symbolic it was. For one night, scenes such as one depicted African Americans being free.
The actors’ relationships worked so well together; everything fit. I was able to distinguish the twins as characters; although they are both played by the same person, I could easily tell a difference.
Specific scene comments:
The line: “Nah, we cousins.” Michael B. Jordan plays the leading role of twins, named Stack and Smoke. Stack wears the color red, and has not really grown up in life> Smoke, on the other hand, is more mature and tries to make better choices, which deep into the movie, you can really see that aspect of Smoke start to come out.

Preacher Boy/ Sammy: This actor [Miles Caton] has an angelic voice, this movie is being called his debut, despite having appearances in shows such as Little Big Shot. He is not known in the acting world all too well compared to most. He is unknown for being a singer and being featured by H.E.R. and Yolanda Adams, but his acting in the movie was equally as beautiful.
In the beginning of the movie, Sammy is wearing a hat like Stack’s, but at the end, his hat is like Smoke’s. Which is such a perfect little detail that adds so much more to the storyline.
The movie was so good and done so incredibly well, I have absolutely no critiques. I don’t feel this way about movies most of the time, just because movies usually have that certain something that is missing, but not this one. The film gave me a lot of closure and allowed me to be happy with where it ended and a lot of films don’t end the movie in such a way that makes its audience happy, but in my opinion, I do not believe there is a better way to end that movie than what they did. The actors also worked so well together that everything fit. I don’t wish that there was an actor they would’ve used instead.
The message overall was delivered very well. This is definitely a movie I’ll want to watch more than once—maybe even three or more times. But this is a movie I recommend to absolutely everyone.
I would name this movie of the year, and it could be seen as the best movie that has come out in a long while.
My rating: 11/10
