Students might recognize Emma Steele as an avid sports fan. But she is much more than that, especially when it comes to the school newspaper. Not only is she the writer for our sports column, but she has also taken on the role of feature editor this year. Her passion for writing and sports runs deep as someone who dreams of a career in sports broadcasting. In each article, she hopes to stand out and make an impression.
What sets Emma apart from other students is her different perspective. While a lot of students get caught up in school drama, Emma is focused on the bigger picture.
“There is a whole other world outside of these four years. I have a perspective that it’s going to work out; you have the rest of your life to figure things out,” explains Emma. She describes herself as independent and has no problem doing things she enjoys by herself.
Now, can you guess what kind of candy Emma would be? Her answer is milk chocolate.
“I think most people like milk chocolate, and if they had the opportunity, they would eat it. But sometimes it’s not the first thing they’re grabbing for.”
Emma keeps it simple and real. The balance of being an approachable person but not always in the spotlight is what sets her apart.
When it comes to her self-identity, her Catholic faith plays a key role.
“It is a huge part of my life, I am an altar server and master of ceremonies. I love it.” Emma mentioned that even though religion isn’t something she always talks about, it is something she is very passionate and proud of.
“My perspective is, you don’t need to talk about it in order to know you believe in it,” she explained.
Over this past year, Emma has grown from attending mass to becoming an active member in her church.
“How lucky am I that I have known this my whole life?” shared Emma. Her faith, just like her love for sports and writing, gives her confidence and purpose.
“I’ve really got into sports and I feel like I’ve always wanted something to do with it,” shares Emma. What drives her is confidence.
“Sports are the one thing that I am completely confident in; I can just talk about it, and I love talking about it.”
Emma’s dad is a big influence when it comes to her sporty side. It was something they were able to bond over.
“Whenever I ask him questions, he never makes me feel dumb, and that’s something I really appreciate because not everyone does that,” shares Emma.
When it comes to writing about sports and the latest game, she was on a roll last year!
“When our basketball team was doing really good, I fell in love with writing about high school sports. It’s something I really want to implement this year,” she shares. This marks her second year as sports editor, so make sure you keep up with her articles.
Emma’s ideal plan for the future is to go to Iowa for mass communications with a minor in sports media. Her dream, “I want to be to host of the Iowa Hawkeyes!”
Welcome back, Emma! We can’t wait to see what games you cover this year!
