Carter Mohagen is a senior in high school. This is his second year in Newspaper. He has gained significant knowledge about the Newspaper and is really happy to be there each day! He joined Newspaper because he enjoys writing and English classes. He joined Journalism 1 in his freshman year, then joined Newspaper in his junior year. Carter is so over the moon about how you can write about almost anything you want.

“I really like the creative leniency that Mrs. Rauenbuehler and everyone else have,” Carter said. “We have creative freedom of what we want to write about. I wrote a series on Fashion Spotlights of people who had cool-looking outfits”.
Newspaper is a very collaborative class. It is filled with creating a community with the people around you and building connections. Carter learned a lot of social aspects from Newspaper, such as speaking to a class.
Carter says, “The best thing I got out of Newspaper is becoming more social and creative. Before I was at an art and writing block, but with Newspaper I got more ideas.”
Carter is hoping for a relaxing senior year and making sure he is “locked in” on school work. He wants to ensure he is on top of things so he can walk across that stage with confidence.
“For Newspaper, I’m hoping to establish lifelong connections before I go off to college, and people who can be with me forever til I’m shrively and old,” said Carter.
It is Carter’s senior year, so things are getting pretty stressful and tough. Carter is a type of person who shows how he deals with stress by pushing through all of his struggles. Although he doesn’t have a clear game plan, he learns from his hardships, which makes him stronger as a person. He is involved in clubs to be more interactive and to be involved in our community at the high school.
“I am involved in FCCLA and Upward Bound. My hobbies are sewing, drawing, painting, writing, long walks, and bike rides to clear my mind,” said Carter.
FCCLA is a family, consumer science, culinary arts, and fashion all mixed together. He learned to create slideshow presentations for them, speaking at many of the events, and became more confident in speaking.
“We did many fundraisers, we did a Valentine’s fundraiser, bake sales, and donations to other different charities, such as a domestic violence shelter. We hand-made tie blankets for families struggling. We went to a huge event, the Iowa State Fashion Show, and it was really cool! We do mainly things containing family consumer science,” said Carter.
Carter had a lot of fun helping out in the community and experiencing things he wouldn’t of done if he weren’t so involved in FCCLA. He made so many cherished memories he can share to others.
“I was scared to speak publicly. I used to have a bit of a speech impediment where I would stutter a lot or flip-flop words, but with the speaking roles I have been in the past, and now it has helped me with a lot of speech and helped me speak on a daily basis,” Carter said.

Carter has grown immensely from these challenges and has him the person he is today. He is a very unique person, and his personality shines through him every day.
“If I were a candy, I would be sweet tart ropes because they have different flavors and they are a unique candy in themself and they are a very sweet candy, and I am a very sweet person, but I have little unique personalities like how sweet tart ropes have different flavors,” said Carter.
