Emma Steele is a junior here at MHS and she’s the girl who is always keeping it real! As of this year, she is in her 3rd year in Marching band and 2nd year as a part of The Auroran Today staff, where she serves as the Sports Section Editor!
“I think everyone thinks about sports when they think about me because that’s pretty much all I talk about.”
Initially, Steele wasn’t necessarily looking into joining newspaper her sophomore year. At first, she joined the school’s Journalism One class because she wanted to be in our school’s broadcasting, “Muskie Minutes.” However, after Mrs. Rauenbuehler came back, she began to get more involved in the class and discovered a genuine interest in writing.
In addition to that, Emma’s biggest goal is getting the student body engaged with ‘The Auroran.’ She explains that the topics of the stories published are very diverse and reflect the genuine passion that comes from our newspaper crew.
Emma explains that the thing that separates her stories from others is that they go deeper than just what’s on the surface. She has a genuine passion for the topics, which why her stories mean so much to her. For example, she described that writing her Iowa football story has been one of her favorites because she already has so much insight and knowledge on the topic.
“I wrote ‘If He Wanted to He Would’ because that was something that I thought that if I would’ve had a year before, I would’ve been a lot better. So I wanted to write for other people.”
Before, when you would ask her, she would say that her career plans were to be a Future ESPN Reporter along with sports journalism in general. But now, plans seem to be shifting into the nursing field. When asked, Emma would explain that she just really enjoys helping people and sees herself as a very empathetic and passionate person. Most people who know Emma would describe her as a very easy person to talk to.”
“I wanted to go into sports journalism for a long time, but now catch me being a nurse,” she said.
Along with seeing herself as a very empathetic and passionate person, she also would describe herself as a zebra or a prairie dog if she were an animal.
She thinks of it as, “You don’t see zebras being mad that much, but prairie dogs are just cool.”
Emma’s personality will continue to be a great addition to our crew this year. So, make sure to keep an eye out for her many amazing upcoming stories.
