Fall is one of the seasons we all look forward to after the long three months of blasting heat. For one, the cooler weather, but also the festivities that follow. Such as pumpkin carving, haunted houses, horror movies, and much more.
But what does Iowa have to offer? Most towns in Iowa are very rural and have little to nothing, such as Muscatine. Let’s dig deeper into the state of Iowa.
A tiny town in Iowa, named Walnut, is home to about 723 residents. Walnut is the Antique City of Iowa, and each year they hold a fall festival. They have many vendors, and treasures to find. Although Walnut is a small town, the event is huge and very popular. This year they claim to go even bigger! “We plan a bigger show this year, so join us for the fun!” This town is just one of many holding big events in Iowa.
Meet Beaverdale Iowa, with a population of about 542 residents as of 2024. Beaverdale holds a fall festival similar to Walnut and has vendors, food, and other activities. What makes this festival unique is its dog costume competition that offers rewards for the different categories. These categories range from best overall, best dog and owner, and people’s choice. This year’s theme is fall-inspired costumes like the Boogeyman or a Scarecrow. Come show some Halloween energy with your favorite pal!
Speaking of Halloween energy, are you interested in true crime/horror? Welcome to the Villisca Axe Murder house. Located in Villisca, Iowa this Murder House is a must-see this Halloween. Villisca Axe Murder House was home to the Moore family until an intruder came and took the lives of the six children and two adults. That same house still lies there, forever stopped in time. People gravitate towards the house for its notoriety, its familiar name, and because it was seemingly abandoned and left exactly as is after the horrific incident. People who have had this experience firsthand note that everything in the house is still there – the kids’ toys, beds made, and furniture nicely arranged. This is great if you’re looking for a real-life thriller and if you’re up for the challenge you can book an overnight stay in the house. So grab your partner or best friend and enjoy a horror-filled night!
If you and your partner, or best friend want to do something general, like pumpkin carving. No Problem! There are pumpkin patches, on pumpkin patches all around Iowa! For example, Buffalo Pumpkin Farm, Sass Family Farm, and Wilson’s Orchard and Farm. There are many options for pumpkin patches, so get a pumpkin and enjoy bringing your orange friend to life!
Overall, if you think your town is lacking in paranormal or cliche fall activities to gear up for Halloween, first off, be willing to get creative. But, also, tap into other communities for these experiences too. There are many other surrounding towns with events yet to come. So stop by one of the events mentioned above or do some of your research this fall!
