For many people, hair is more than just a thing that grows in strands out of their head. It holds the significance of being an extension of oneself. Hair is something to care for, style, and love. How one styles their hair displays the varying parts of one’s identity. It expresses individuality through different styles, and the way that one cares for their hair shows their self-love and the effort they put into being who they are.
In this collection of stories, want to focus on a few MHS students’ stories of loving and caring for their hair. This story specifically is about Melita Duo.
For Melita, her relationship with her hair has been ever-changing throughout her life.
“My hair journey has changed over time. I used to wear the same hairstyles consistently then as I got older I started branching out with different styles and colors.”
She has experimented with a variety of things, yet one was simply unforgettable.
“My most memorable hair moment was when I had a red Mohawk. I honestly don’t know who let me walk around with that.”
Melita’s hair has consistently been very personal and intimate to her.
“I used to be bald due to health reasons, so growing my hair out allowed me to distance myself from that time.”
Hair not only represents oneself but also symbolizes growth and change. A new hairstyle can make someone feel like a whole new person. At times, simple things like hairstyles can come with the fear of being judged, and pressure to “fit in”. Melita shared,
“If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be that hair isn’t that big of a deal. Cut it, dye it, do what you want with it.”
After working with and trying new styles, she has grown to love knotless boho braids, an easy and good-looking style that has become her go-to. One trend that she loves is,
“The pixie cut. I think it can make a big comeback from the 90s.”
I hope you enjoyed Melita’s story and read all the other stories that are a part of this collection. For more curly and coily stories, check out the Mhs auroran website!!!!
