Kenzie Wilks is a Senior here at MHS, and while we’ve all read Kaitlyn’s amazing story about Matthew Spies being a drum major, it’s time to meet another one!
Going into high school, she joined the marching band and learned the flute. In the following years, she expanded her musical experience and took on clarinet, alongside alto, soprano, and tenor saxophone. As of this year, Kenzie has been a drum major for 2 years, also tackling various other activities such as show choir combo, jazz, and musical pit.
With that being said, band has just always been Kenzie’s “clique” and became deeply passionate about it when freshman year came around. For some, they may seem like a lot to manage, but for Kenzie, she “just hates being bored and sitting at home,” so that continues to motivate her success.
“Everyone has potential, the same kid in math who does poorly will come into band and absolutely shred on trombone,” she said.
However, being a drum major wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. At first, just as it would be for anybody, it was stressful for Wilks because she kept to herself and wasn’t very social.
Since then, Kenzie has found herself more comfortable in the band and shares her success by saying, “This is gonna be so corny but my greatest achievement is just seeing the band improve.”
One of the greatest joys for Kenzie and the rest of the band has been seeing how much more involved the Muskie Student section has been during their shows during our Home Football games here at MHS.
Some of her biggest influences and support systems come from her teachers here, Mr. Heid, Mr O’Shaugnessy, and former teacher Mr. Plummer. Along with other former drum majors who taught her more about leadership and life lessons, helping her to come out of her shell by creating an amazing culture in the band program.
Despite her unbelievable talent and commitment to music, she is the first person in her family to play an instrument in high school. She started with something completely unknown and new to her and turned it into a clear vision for the future.
“After high school, I hope to start college to major in music education so I can hopefully be a band director one day.”
To see Kenzie in action, go Support our Mighty Muskie Marching Band during the Invitational on October 12th at the MHS stadium starting at 4:45 pm!

Wonderful article, Kelsy. Kenzie is so talented. I’m glad it has helped her come out of her shell a little bit. Great preparation for becoming a band instructor.
