Growing Up and Looking Back

A poem about the irony of being a senior
Growing Up and Looking Back

The last weeks of high school

Gutwrenching feelings of

anticipation and nostalgia

Hit me at the same time

As I walk through these halls

Speak to my teachers

And sit in the classes

I remember August, my freshman year

Memorizing my first schedule

And blasting Gemini Rights by Steve Lacy

People warned me it would go by fast

Obviously, I didn’t listen

And continued on

Personally, I never thought growing up would happen to me

Looking back on it all is bittersweet

Now, as a senior

I am stuck in a state of hyper awareness

I look back

At my memories

My friends

And my life as I know it

Yet I look forward

At what’s to come

How my life will change

And starting adulthood

Being so old yet so young is terrifying

I’ve grown so much since starting high school

Yet I am resetting my entire life

And starting again

In a month, I will have already graduated

My last summer at home will begin

And I will have to prepare myself

To live on my own for the first time

But for now

I’ll enjoy the rest of the time I have

In highschool
