Having a staycation this spring break? Check out some of these hidden gems!
Six places you need to visit over spring break

Muscatine has a lot more to offer than just Walmart. Truthfully, our little town is a hotspot for small businesses, yet so many are undiscovered. If you’re staying in town for break, but want to do a little local exploration, use this as a guide!

The Little Red Hen

The coolest sewing shop in town, The Little Red Hen, is a barn-styled craft store lined with walls of different types of fabric. The store expands into a few different rooms, with sewing accessories and patterns. This hidden gem has everything from fleece fabric to animal patterns. If you want to get into a sewing project over break, this is the store for all your needs!

Lock and Dam No. 16

Just outside of Muscatine is the Lock and Dam No. 16. It’s the perfect spot to visit for a relaxing time of watching the water, and the best time to go is around sunset. Take a little day trip over break for a calming time and beautiful pictures. Added bonus – You can see the bridge and riverfront from the dam!

Acapulco Bakery

Acapulco Bakery is a Hispanic-style convenience store on Grandview Avenue that has a butcher, groceries, and of course, baked goods. If you like tres leches, conchas, or just simply want to try something new, Acapulco is the place to visit. The store has a wide variety of drinks and snacks from many Latino cultures.

Iowa Parrot Rescue

The Iowa Parrot Rescue helps rehab captive parrots. The shelter has birds up for adoption, and is currently seeking volunteers. Whether you’re looking for a new feathery friend or just want a good side quest, the Iowa Parrot Rescue is the place to visit!

Greenpoint Bookstore

Greenpoint is Muscatine’s only bookstore, and holds the title well. The bookstore not only has books, but writing accessories, snacks for sale while you browse, and even blind dates with books. Their wide selection of books and self-care book baskets makes Greenpoint a top choice – even with no other competition.

The Cottage

The cottage is a gift shop on Park Avenue. What used to be a house is now the shop, lined with jewelry, clothing, and other miscellaneous merchandise. If you’re looking for a gift, this is the place to go! A good portion of their products are locally themed, showing Muskie and Muscatine pride.

Have you been to any of these places yet? Make sure to go out and explore more in Muscatine, and have a good spring break!
