Utah soda shops took the internet by storm with their “dirty sodas”. Dirty sodas include a base of your preference for soda, creamer, and maybe some syrups or fresh fruit. Think of a cross between a Shirley Temple and a root beer float.
Over half of Utah’s population identifies as part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Traditionally, members of the LDS Church follow strict religious practices of abstaining from “Hot Drinks” like coffee and tea. Thus came the idea of shops strictly for soda combinations.
Swig and Fiiz were some of the first soda shops founded in 2010. Since then, many other shops have opened with the same idea, to provide a substitute for forbidden drinks like coffee or alcohol.
Sophomore, Brenna Gray, visits Utah often and loves to go to her favorite soda shop, Swig.
“I’ve been to Swig a few times and every time I’ve gone, I’ve loved it,” said Brenna. “Every time I go to Utah I beg my parents to take me there.”
Although highly unlikely, some people agree that adding a chain soda shop like Swig to Muscatine would be very exciting. It is always fun to have something different than your typical coffee shop.
“Having a shop in Iowa would be amazing,” Brenna said, “I would be going at least once a week if I could.”
If you ever decide to take a trip to Swig or any other soda shop, Brenna recommends anything with rootbeer.
