Art & Academia; Carters Colorful Journey

Get to know Carter Mohagen

Carter Fox Mohagen is currently a sophomore at MHS. Like other sophomores, this school year has been an amazing comeback for him.
Carter has engaged in more school activities this year and has stepped out of his comfort zone. Currently, he is participating in Key Club, Upward Bound, and iJag. Being involved in more school activities has helped him meet new people and explore different opportunities. Carter participated in Upward Bound’s trip to Chicago over spring break. He was one of 30 students chosen to go on the trip. He also frequently attends their Saturday Academy held once a month where he gets to join other students from two local high schools and enjoy different activities and speakers.
He takes school and his work very seriously and plans to attend college to become a traveling nurse. Carter stated the reason he would like be become a nurse is because he loves helping people in any way that he can. People describe him as a very loving and kind person.
Besides school, Carter has many interesting hobbies such as drawing, painting, sewing, and gardening. Thrifting is also a big hobby of his that helps with his hobby of exploring fashion. Although he enjoys all of these, he takes the biggest interest in art. Several sketchbooks of pieces he has done over the years show his growth as an artist and as a person.

Carter has had an interest in art since elementary and continued exploring it as he got older. Art is very therapeutic for him and has helped him overcome challenges. As is true for others, art helps to express his emotions, share his thoughts, and make something that tells a story.
“It helped me get rid of any negative emotions I had. I was finally able to find myself and do things I enjoy,” said Carter.
This year compared to last year he has improved a lot in all aspects. Carter is very open about his struggles in the past which include mental health, grades, and social life. Art has helped him overcome these struggles and he has gained new friends, a positive outlook on life, and a goal to work for which has helped him improve his grades.
“I feel like I am at a point where I can support myself both academically and mentally.”

Another thing that has helped him is having a scheduled routine. His routine consists of having work days where he gets all his work in, a day for self-care, a day for art and reading, and lastly a day to just hang out with friends. Having this schedule helps him keep a good work/school life balance.

Carter is a loving, loyal and genuine person. “Like a ray of sunshine” is how some might describe him. He sees the good in every person and never judges before getting to know them. Carter is a great student, son, brother, and friend. Today, March 28, happens to be his birthday. Let’s all wish him a happy birthday together. Happy Birthday Carter we love you!

Once you start art you see the world differently and you view things as art.
