Essential Tips and Insights for Your Journey to China

Your ultimate guide to an unforgettable trip to China!

Are you one of the lucky students going to China next week? If so, keep reading this. I’ll cover a few things you might want to know before heading to China.

Whenever you go to any foreign country, it is always important to educate yourself on their culture and customs because they differ greatly from yours. China is a very strict country. Citizens aren’t allowed certain apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and even TikTok. Don’t worry though because you’ll still be able to access these apps if you have roaming data. Since people who live in China can’t access these apps, I suggest you download WeChat.

Communication
“WeChat” is an app similar to WhatsApp. In China, most people use this app to communicate and pay for items. So if you plan on making new friends and keeping in touch, download “WeChat”!

Forms of Payment
Because China is mainly a contactless payment form country, most places do not accept cards or American USD. If you plan on making lots of purchases, you should set up payment on “WeChat”. To set up payment, you first need to create an account, go to the chats page, click on the plus at the top right corner, and select money. From here, you can add a card and set up the contactless payment.

Mini Paparazzi?
While in public you might notice people taking pictures of your group or even

coming up to you and asking for a picture with you. They are just surprised to see a big group of foreigners. It is pretty common so don’t be so shocked.

Bathroom Situation
A shocker for most people is the bathroom. In China, public restrooms don’t have regular toilets, they are “squat toilets”. If you aren’t familiar with a squat toilet it would be a good idea to look it up so you know what you’re working with. Lucky for you though, the hotels you will be staying in have regular toilets.

Outlets
If you plan on bringing your chromebook or straightener/curler just know that the outlets are different. It would help if you bought an adapter. Chinese outlets are different with a straight port and a slanted one. Your phone charger will still work with these outlets.

This trip is a great opportunity to try new things, meet new people, and experience a beautiful culture. Make sure to follow all rules given by chaperones and to be respectful. Remember you are representing Muscatine High School, great things are expected. I hope these tips helped and have a safe flight!
