Iden’s Passions: Exploring Different Hobbies

Get to know sophomore Iden Piotrowski and all the different things he enjoys!

Do you know how to surf or do taekwondo? Can you skate or do a backflip? No? Well, Iden can, and there’s a lot more to him so let’s find out more about him together.

Iden Victor Piotrowski lived in Hawaii until he was eight years old. There he lived with his mom, dad, and sister. In Hawaii, he learned how to surf and it became a frequent activity until 2017, when his parents decided to move to Muscatine to be closer to family.

Today, Iden is a sophomore at Muscatine High School. He has many hobbies but is most passionate about one in particular, martial arts. Iden stated that he’s always had an interest in fighting sports so when he started high school, he joined martial arts.

Ran by Jesse Valenzuela, Martial Arts has been at the high school for two years now. They run through traditional martial arts a.k.a taekwondo (TKD). The class consists of learning basic TKD skills and life lessons. Last year he and several other students were selected as team leaders. This year Iden was appointed team captain after showing a real interest in helping others in the class. Iden is currently a third-level brown belt and happened to be one of the few students who qualified for international martial arts.
Jesse Valenzuela stated that Iden has improved greatly in TKD, and as a student.
“He’s a very respectful kid, he listens to teachers and has self-discipline,” said Jesse.

Besides Martial Arts, Iden also has a strong passion for the guitar. He was introduced to many different types of music as a kid, influencing him to learn an instrument. Growing up listening to “dad rock” his dad became a big influence on his music life.

His dad encouraged him to play the guitar so in 7th grade he gave it a shot. Now he’s been practicing for a little over three years.

If you want to learn how to play the guitar or any other instrument Iden said, “Keep at it. It’s not as hard as you think it is.”

Along with learning the guitar, he also learned how to skate. Mainly because his friends knew how to skate. He says he is still not very good at it, but continues practicing. He is a very motivated individual and doesn’t like giving up. For example, learning how to do backflips took time. He started practicing when he was nine and said it only took him about a week to get down. Still, he kept practicing and even gained more friendships through it.

What you might not know about Iden is that he wants to study in the medical field. He expressed having an interest in the area of psychology and sociology. Iden has taken both courses this school year and found learning about people and the brain interesting. He wants to go to college to pursue something in this field.

Iden is a very motivated person who looks for those same qualities in friends. He already has plans for his future but in the meantime, he makes sure to enjoy the present. That’s why he has so many hobbies. So if you want to learn taekwondo, the guitar, or how to skate, he’s your guy.
