Downtown Muscatine is the home of many bustling small businesses. Whether cozy cafes or quirky boutiques and thrift stores, Muscatine is a vibrant hub of entrepreneurial spirit. Along Second Street, there is a cute little salon named Salon Incognito. It has been a staple salon in Muscatine for 19 years, and hairdresser Crystal McFate has been there for them all.
“I would say that my mother inspired me to become a stylist,” said Crystal, “She went through cosmetology school and from that is where I got my passion. Ever since I was little I always knew that this is what I was made for.”
Salon Incognito is always welcome for anyone and everyone, and Crystal says that this is one of her favorite parts about her job. Her spunky personality is just the beginning of knowing Crystal, she truly wants to get to know her clients on a deeper level. Whether it is your first time getting your hair done or if you have been a regular for years, she loves working with everyone.
“I love meeting new people and having a relationship with the clients I have. It is so fun to “solve” the puzzle of their hair!” Crystal said, “Making them feel confident and beautiful. Teaching them new things and to better understand their hair.”
There is something about a small business that just feels more comfortable than any regular chain haircut place. Knowing that the owners truly built the business from the ground up is something that they should be proud of, as well as anyone supporting them.
“I believe with all my heart when we support others and help them grow, we grow ourselves! When we support local we are not only supporting a small local business, we are supporting families and friends,” Crystal explained, “We are helping to put food on that family’s table and making their dreams come true. Always support small!”
Although she is content where she is at, Crystal feels there is always room to grow. This past January she celebrated her 19th year of being at Salon Incognito! She is excited for many more years there and getting to learn more every day.
“I think goals for my future include moving forward with all the education I can get! Taking classes to improve myself and my craft.” Crystal stated, “Pushing myself to become a better stylist EVERY DAY. To bring new ideas and knowledge to my clients.”
The Cosmetology Industry is growing and is expected to continue to grow in the future. Crystal has some words of wisdom for anyone, especially high schoolers, looking to go into the industry.
“Do it! Go to a salon and job shadow for a day, see what it’s like. Or to go to the cosmetology college and ask all the questions you can!” Crystal encouraged.
Crystal is a friendly face to many while also being one of the most popular hairdressers to high school students. She has a special talent for making people feel their best by looking their best. I highly recommend scheduling a hair appointment with Crystal and you will leave feeling like a million bucks.
“I always say, I have yet to go to work a day of my life as a cosmetologist because I love what I do and enjoy it so much!” Crystal said.
