The Great Summer Hustle

From lemonade stands to life guarding, these are just a few different jobs to pass the time this summer while making money!

With summertime approaching, and this school year ending, many students are looking for a way to spend their time productively while also making money. Luckily, Muscatine has a lot of part time and full time career opportunities for teens.

An aspect of Muscatine that tends to be overlooked is the amount of small businesses that are willing to hire teens! Of course, there’s always larger corporations that are hiring like Burger King and Walmart, but a lot of small businesses are more flexible with student’s schedules during the summer, with sports and vacations. A lot of these jobs also are seasonal, so they’re only available in summer.

The first job that is great for people who want to be outside while they work, is at the Aquatic Center! Being a lifeguard is an iconic summer job that allows you to still be outside while you earn money. Lifeguards need to receive lifeguard training, which is provided at the Y here in Muscatine. Here’s the schedule for upcoming training sessions!

Another good summer job is at Tee’s! Ice cream is a classic summer dessert but working in an ice cream restaurant is a fun and exciting seasonal job. Tee’s is a great first job, with flexible hours. With the busy season during summer, you don’t have to worry about work affecting school. Tee’s is also out of season during the winter to give you time to focus on school.

There’s also plenty of farmer’s markets all summer long, one of these is Taylor’s Market near Fruitland. From detasseling corn, picking and sorting cantaloupes, peppers, tomatoes, watermelons, and vegetables to cleaning them, this job is outside as well, for people who still want to get tan but maybe not sit by a pool all day.

These were just a few jobs to take up some of your time during summer, keep in mind there’s plenty of other options that pop up in summer, from mowing lawns to helping someone garden!
