You may have noticed a couple of new faces at the attendance office! The change happened at the beginning of semester two. Meet Ms. Sanchez and Mr. Daggs: Your new attendance staff.
Auroran: Tell me a little bit about yourself… (Where were you working before MHS?)
Sanchez: I started with the district in 2001. Most recently, I was at McKinley Elementary. I am a mom of 5, and I love fishing, camping, and watching my daughter dance.
Daggs: I originally started working for the school district in 2024 at SCJH. Down there, I worked as a member of the safety team and would help run the ISS room for half the day. Additionally, I also run the gaming club for SCJH, where we host tournaments and hang out. It’s really fun.
Auroran: What are the most important responsibilities of the attendance office?
Sanchez: I think the most important responsibility of the attendance office is making sure the students’ attendance is correct and up to date. I also think it is important to smile and be pleasant, as we are the first faces that people see when they enter the building.
Daggs: Taking attendance, lost and found, and directing guests.
Auroran: What are some challenges you foresee facing in this position?
Sanchez: Learning all of the students’ names and faces is the hardest part for me.
Auroran: What does a typical day in the attendance office look like?
Sanchez: Answering the phone (which rings non-stop), talking to parents, talking to all of the people that enter the building throughout the day, inputting attendance when there is a sub in the classroom, and so many other little things.
Daggs: For me, it usually starts with setting up my office in the corner of the entrance. After that, it is mainly just checking people in with SmartPass, taking phone calls, and helping guests get to where they need to go.
Auroran: What advice would you give students about avoiding attendance problems?
Sanchez: Come to school, go to class, and be there on time!
Auroran: How do you hope to contribute to a positive school environment?
Sanchez: Be kind first and foremost. Build a rapport with the students that will let you. Just be kind!
Daggs: By being a friendly face, people see me whenever they enter the building. 🙂

Good article, Ella! I agree – Ms. Sanchez and Mr. Daggs have stepped up in a big way. These positions were not easy ones to take over and they have handled it very well. It helps that they had a good mentor in Mrs. Borde. We are so fortunate to have them at MHS!
