This summer, much like last, was one for the box offices. “Twisters” was one of the most anticipated movies, a sequel to the classic, “Twister”. The original Twister movie was a staple to Iowans, with parts being filmed in our home state. “Twisters” was mainly anticipated because of the casting for the movie. Hollywood heartthrob Glen Powell as Tyler and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate. They both travel to Tornado Valley, Oklahoma to chase tornados.
Kate is persuaded by her friend from college, Javi, to help set up a 3-D mapping system to understand exactly how tornadoes form and how they can stop them from forming. This comes after she finds a new career path in meteorology following a near-death tornado-chasing experience a few years prior. Tyler is in Oklahoma for a similar reason, except for entertainment purposes. He has a massive following on YouTube as “The Tornado Wrangler.”
The film starts with the two not liking each other. Kate assumes Tyler is chasing tornadoes for fun and selling his tacky merch to profit from stupidity. What she doesn’t know is that the money that Tyler and his team make from selling merch goes to supplies and food to give to the residents of the town after a tornado hits.
Kate learns that Storm Par, the company she is helping with, ultimately benefits from these natural disasters. When Tyler invites Kate to a rodeo, they are enjoying their time until a large tornado hits the area. Tyler and Kate hide out in an empty pool next to a motel.
After the close call with the tornado, Kate retreats to her childhood home to stay with her mother for a little bit where she finds all of her old plans to stop a tornado that she made when she was younger. Soon after she gets there, Tyler follows, where he also learns about her expert plan to decrease the size of tornadoes.
After Tyler encourages Kate to act on the plan that she made when she was younger, Kate joins Tyler’s team to try to fight a tornado in El Reno. They begin evacuating everyone in the town to a safe shelter place before chaos ensues. Kate successfully manages to make the tornado smaller and reduce the destruction that it caused.
Following this close call, Kate goes to the airport ready to get on a flight back to New York City and Tyler happens to be accompanying her to the airport. The movie ends with Tyler and Kate retreating to his car, many fans of the movie assume that Tyler and Kate get their happy ending in Oklahoma. However, it was not shown in the movie.
Many viewers took to social media to express their annoyance with how the movie ended, saying that there was so much tension, that they should have ended the movie with a more romantic ending. However, other fans felt differently, the movie was not a romance movie but that aspect was just barely there.
At this time in the movie industry, any movie that Glen Powell stars in is bound to be a box-office hit. But the movie’s real star was the soundtrack that highlighted many popular country artists including, Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson, Bailey Zimmerman, and Megan Moroney. It also gave exposure to smaller artists such as Flatland Calvery, Wyatt Flores, and Dylan Gossett.
Overall the movie got an excellent rep and A+ reviews. During its theatrical run, the movie grossed over $368.9 million worldwide. The original Twister movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton grossed $495.7 million worldwide, still, $126 million more than its sequel.
The movie is well-paced and never stops. The special effects and the sets are very impressive. It’s not like an action movie that looks fake the whole time. All of the moving parts seemed to come together to make this movie work, because it had such a good run in the summer you can still see the movie in theaters. If you enjoy action movies or anything with Glen Powell, this movie is one to check out.
